Networking Opportunities
Students have additional opportunities to get involved in NASSM through the annual conference. Unparalleled opportunities to interact with faculty from across North America and internationally are particularly helpful for those doctoral students who will be job searching upon degree completion. Students gain additional exposure through academic presentations. Conference presentations provide opportunities for you to share your work with others with similar research interests and to practice your presentation skills. Check the NASSM guidelines for abstract submission to the conference, available through the NASSM Conference link on this website. If you have any questions about the conference, please don’t hesitate to contact any member of our current Student Board.
2009/20010 Student Officer Nomination
The NASSM Student Initiative Committee will solicit nominations for the positions of one (1) student representative (president) and three (3) student board representatives during the spring of 2009.
We encourage you to run for these positions for at least two reasons:
- Current and former student board members have testified that the leadership experience and the opportunity to serve the NASSM student membership are both personally and professionally valuable.
- These positions can be extremely helpful for building your professional network and reputation.
Here are a few things we would like you to keep in mind when considering these positions:
- Please try to run for a student board member position first if you have not served on the board. To ensure the continuity of implementing NASSM student initiatives, we encourage those who have experiences with the NASSM student board to run for the student president position.
- If you do choose to run for the student president (yes, you can do so without previous involvement with the NASSM student board), you will be automatically considered as a candidate for a board member position if not elected for the student president position.
- Candidates who wish to be considered for the student president and board members must submit a nomination PRIOR TO THE CONFERENCE. An email will be sent from the student president on April 1, 2009 outlining the election procedure. Simply nominate yourself in order to run the position. Please fill out the nomination form that will be sent via email and send it back to the student president no later than March 30, 2009. This form allows you to provide a brief bio of yourself as well as outline the contribution you feel you could make to the NASSM student membership as a student representative. This information will be posted on the NASSM website by May 15, 2009 for members to review before the conference.
- The election will take place during the student luncheon on Thursday May 28, 2009 at the NASSM conference, Columbia, South Carolina. You must attend the luncheon or entrust someone to represent you during the luncheon to be elected for the position.
- During the election in Columbia, you will be introduced to the student membership but will not be asked to make a presentation. Please make yourself available during the student luncheon for the election.
- You must be a current NASSM student member to be qualified for nomination. So, if you have not registered for your membership this year, please do so immediately.
