Student Initiatives

Networking Initiative

Have you ever wanted to talk to a NASSM faculty member, but don't have the nerve to walk up and introduce yourself? Have you ever wished there were more opportunities to discuss your research and future goals with NASSM faculty? The NASSM Student Board has put together the first annual "NASSM Student-Faculty Networking Initiative" to help serve this need. The purpose of this initiative is to bring together students and faculty that may not otherwise have a chance to meet. Informally, students and faculty will get the chance to discuss anything from potential graduate study connections to research collaboration, or simply take the opportunity to get to know a potential mentor for the future. Check your email for information about this exciting initiative or contact Shannon Hamm at shamm2@uwo.ca. It is the connections that we make that contribute to the continuous benefit of NASSM membership!

The Process and Value of Effective Grant Writing in Higher Education: A Workshop for Students

The NASSM Student Board is pleased to announce several scholars will be participating in the grant writing seminar on Thursday at 3:30 PM in Richland B. Our panelists have been successful in securing numerous grants of substantial amounts and have agreed to speak to the students and share their insights regarding the process and value of successful grant writing in higher education. Our panelists are:

  • Dr. Daniel Connaughton - University of Florida
  • Dr. Graham Cuskelly - Griffith University
  • Dr. Wendy Frisby - University of British Columbia
  • Dr. Mark Lyberger - Kent State University

Please join us for what promises to be a very informative session that will be most helpful for students seeking employment in higher education.

The NASSM student board is committed to providing fellow students with programs and information which can benefit them as they proceed through their studies and proceed into the search for employment in higher education. The purpose of this panel presentation is two-fold: to provide Master's and Doctoral students with information related to obtaining external funding in order to support research endeavors and to describe how success in securing external funding improves one's marketability as a candidate for employment as well as potential for gaining tenure. The panel will discuss a variety of topics including: common sources of funding for sport management related research (e.g., government agencies, private foundations, corporate/business sector, etc.), types of projects that receive funding (e.g., marketing, socio-cultural, organizational theory, etc.), information to include in a successful grant proposal and common pitfalls in unsuccessful grant proposals. The panel will also discuss why institutions of higher education desire faculty who can/do write successful grant proposals and how writing a successful grant and securing external funding affects the process of securing tenure. Although the focus of this panel discussion is to orient students with significant aspects of the grant writing process, all NASSM attendees are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. We hope you will consider joining us for this informative and valuable session!

2009 NASSM Student Social

Together with members of our host university, the NASSM Student Board has put together an exciting social opportunity. The social will be held during a Columbia Blowfish baseball game on Friday Night, at 7:00pm. The social serves as an informal opportunity for students to network with fellow students and faculty members, and enjoy an evening out together! The Columbia Blowfish are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and will be giving away Braves tickets as part of a promotion. Transportation will be provided from the convention center beginning at 6:00pm. For dinner, concession prices are reasonably priced and offer a variety of options. Check your email for information about this exciting initiative or contact Tommy Aicher at taicher@hlkn.tamu.edu.

Meals

Your registration covers three meals during the conference (the Student Luncheon on May 28th, the President Luncheon on May 29th, and the Zeigler Award Banquet on May 30th). These functions are great for saving money and also for socializing. See the conference Event Schedule for more details.
