Student Initiatives
Networking Initiative
The NASSM Conference generates a lot of networking opportunities and the NASSM Student Board encourages every student attendee to take advantage of these opportunities to meet both students and faculty. It is the hope of the student board for each student to leave the conference knowing they made valuable relationships with colleagues. To help facilitate networking, last year's student board started the NASSM Student-Faculty Networking Initiative to bring together students and faculty in an informal setting to discuss research, teaching, and careers. The program was a success, so it will be offered again this year. Before the conference, faculty will be recruited to participate in the program. Those interested will provide their availability during the conference. Students will have the opportunity to sign-up with participating faculty during the opening reception on Wednesday, June 2. If you have questions please contact Katie Meyer at meyer424@yahoo.com.
Transitioning from Doctoral Student to Faculty: A Workshop for Students
As students, surely we are all anticipating the day we can be referred to as Doctor and proceed to a faculty position. However, have you ever wondered what the transition from doctoral student to junior faculty member entails? The NASSM Student Board is pleased to announce the opportunity for students to hear some of the brightest junior faculty in sport management discuss this very matter. The date and time will be posted in the conference program. Our panelists come from assorted types of institutions (i.e. teaching based, research based) and have agreed to give students insight pertaining to this transition. The panelists for this discussion are:
- Dr. Jacqueline McDowell-University of Illinois
- Dr. Eric MacIntosh-University of Ottawa
- Dr. Amanda Paule-Bowling Green State University
- Dr. Tommy Aicher-Northern Illinois University
We encourage all to come out for what promises to be an informative session for current doctoral students who endeavor to become junior faculty upon graduation.
Serving as NASSM student representatives, we are entrusted with the responsibility of designing initiatives, which will benefit NASSM student members as they progress through coursework and ultimately employment in higher education. Our beloved faculty members play a crucial role as we make this transition to the academy of teaching, research, and service. This occurs not only in directing us through our studies, but hearing what their experiences were as they transitioned from doctoral student to faculty member. Thus, the purpose of this panel presentation will be to give these individuals voice concerning their experiences. The panel will discuss a variety of topics including but not limited to the following: interview process, teaching/research/service expectations, tenure, typical day as a faculty member as compared to a doctoral student, etc. It is worth pointing out that although the focus of this panel presentation is geared towards doctoral students, all NASSM attendees are encouraged to attend and participate. The student board looks forward to you joining us for this discussion! For more information on this panel presentation, contact Kwame Agyemang at kwame@hlkn.tamu.edu.
2010 NASSM Student Social
The NASSM Student Board is planning a student social for Friday evening of the conference. The social is a great way to meet and network with other students and faculty members in a more casual setting. Details of the event are forthcoming. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact Marion Hambrick at marion.hambrick@louisville.edu.
