Panel Presentation

Title: "Working in Academia: Experiences, Lessons, and Advice"

Moderator: Nefertiti Walker

Panel members: Dr. Michael Sagas, Dr. Brenda Pitts, Dr. John Singer, Dr. Shannon Kerwin, and Dr. Trevor Bopp

Description: The purpose of this student-led panel is to inform students on the many different perspectives and experiences of faculty members on the topic of getting a job in academia and working toward tenure. Members boast a wide variety of experiences and point of views such as lecturer, assistant, associate, and full professor experience. We have experience from minorities and women, as well as advice on pursuing a career internationally. Students will benefit from the variety of knowledge each panel member can speak to, considering their different appointments, faculty positions, and stages of career. Both the perspective of the candidate searching for a job, as well as the department head/chair making a hiring a decision will be present on our board.

Mentoring Initiative

Faculty and Students should look forward to an email requesting their interest to participate in the mentoring initiative this year. The focus of the mentoring initiative is to create long term relationships with faculty and students in similar areas of research. The goal is to expose participants to professional and personal development through personal contact with professors. Furthermore, faculty will share their knowledge with promising scholars as a means of furthering the quality of work produced in the field and preparing the new generation of researchers and practitioners in sport management.

Student Social

The student social is a great way to meet and network with other students in a more casual setting. This year's student social is planned for Friday evening on London's Richmond Row. Further details on an exact location are forthcoming.

Student Luncheon

This year's student luncheon is scheduled to take place Thursday during the lunch break at the Spoke on campus. The link below provides more information about this venue.

The lunch will be a pasta buffet, with salad, bread and drink included. Student board elections will also take place at this time.
